Find the sound of your tinnitus

This short listening exercise builds a match to the sound you hear — its pitch and its texture — then tests whether outside sound can cover it, and sets you up with a masker to rest your ears in. About four minutes.

Use headphones in a quiet room. Set your device volume somewhere soft and comfortable — you can adjust it freely during the first steps. Which ear is your tinnitus in?

One rule for the whole exercise: if any sound becomes painful, turn it down or stop. Never push to the level of pain — one step below pain is always the stopping point. Short of that, don't be shy: some steps are supposed to get loud.
